The new 91VXL from OREGON®. A longer cutter, for longer life and a fast and smooth cut. Or X=faster. L= longer life.

OREGON® 91VS had long been the preferred chain for many semi-professional chain saw users and homeowners alike. The combination of its low kickback, smooth operation and fast-cutting action, allied to legendary OREGON® quality, won it many friends. In 2008, OREGON® went one better with 91VX; retaining all the patented features of 91VS such as the anti-vibration VIBE-BANTM and the advanced LubrilinkTM and LubriwellTM. VX added a whole lot more SPEED, while retaining the famously smooth operation. Now in 2009, OREGON® has gone one better yet again, with 91VXL. L signifies a longer top plate on the cutter. The 33% longer top plate provides much longer chain life, while the easily identifiable Blue OREGON® cutters signify OREGON®'s fastest chain saw grind, the "X". Rather than just add length to 91VX, OREGON®'s engineers designed this chain from the ground up, to ensure the chain performance was worthy of the 91VXL label. Speed, smoothness, long life. With OREGON® VXL, bigger really is better.OREGON® Technical Services Manager Pierre Dupont is clearly proud of the new chain: "We pioneered the low profile 91 chain nearly 35 years ago and despite many imitators, we believe it remains the best. This new development ensures that, with the 91VXL, OREGON® remains clearly at the forefront of this important market sector."

All for one and... One-For-All.

Alain Tasquin at OREGON® introduces the new One-For All range of blades designed to fit the majority of combustion engine-powered grass mowers. "The clever mounting system on the One-For-All adapts to wide variety of central holes including those on the MTD and other machines with a square or rectangular shaped cavity. The One-For-All system means dealers no longer need carry a huge inventory of blades and can quickly satisfy all their customers’ needs. What’s more, as well as regular flat blades, the One-For-All range includes the patented 3-in-1 system that cuts, mulches and bags with a single gator blade. All blades come in a variety of lengths making it easy for customers to choose exactly the right blade no matter what their brand of mower".

BLOUNT EUROPE SA has moved its European warehousing and distribution operations to Courcelles.

After 40 years in a building adjacent to Blount Europe's administration and operation centre in Nivelles the company has recently moved its European warehousing and distribution operations to a brand new, purpose-built distribution centre in Courcelles.Click here to download the pictureWe met with Blount Europe's Managing Director of European Operations, Scott Sander and European Operations Manager Fernando Picone for an update. Scott, I guess the first question is an obvious one, why the move? Scott Sander: When Blount came to Europe in the 1960s we were actually making saw chain here, so the building was originally constructed as a manufacturing facility. Although our chain making activities had ceased we continued to occupy the premises for admin and sales and marketing, technical operations etc. Later, as the business grew, we acquired the building next door which was mainly used for warehousing. Again this was actually built to be a manufacturing plant and did therefore not have high enough ceilings and appropriate flooring, making racking and storage difficult. So the business had actually outgrown the facilities and there was absolutely no room for expansion. Our US headquarters gave us the green light to move in July last year and the search was on for the right location which turned out to be a 10,000 sq. metre building in Courcelles. Moving location can be a headache, Fernando, but what are the advantages of the new distribution centre? Fernando Picone: Well, there are many. For a start, we have more than doubled our storage capacity. When the move is complete, we will use only about 60% of the available space, leaving lots of room for expansion. And we have used this opportunity to totally change the way we deal with handling the products. We made extensive visits to our distribution centre in the US, picking up ideas and analysing methodologies. The goal was to combine ideas and thinking power to come up with state-of-the-art systems. Speaking of systems, are all your group companies working with the same EDI systems? Scott Sander: Absolutely. Every subsidiary now uses SAP, so we have a common language and a fully integrated system. We can see where goods are in the chain and have great visibility of demand all the way back to the factory so now we can talk about it as a true distribution chain. We can also exchange information with external suppliers much more easily. We are working on giving dealers web access for order tracking starting with our French operation. Fernando, you talked about altering the way you handle products. What do you mean by that? Fernando Picone: We have a wide variety of products in terms of their size, shape and weight. This inevitably involves a high degree of manual handling. The new distribution centre with its 10 m high ceiling makes it much easier for vehicles and people to move around. We are moving to a process-oriented system with wave picking and the introduction of barcodes and an RF installation which will make it much more efficient. We can really talk about a real-time warehouse. We also have many more truck access gates. In Nivelles we had only two, here we have 13. Scott Sander: Having all the additional room has also allowed us to designate space for training with mowers and chain saws and our industrial concrete division also has its own area for equipment servicing and repair. So your lives are much easier, but what is in it for the customer? Fernando Picone: The customers' main benefit is that they will receive orders more quickly because the higher efficiency will allow us to turn things round more rapidly. Order processing times will be reduced and the human error element will be all but non-existent. And the employees? Scott Sander: Our people are very keen on the new centre. The working environment is modern and spacious, a big improvement over the previous surroundings. In the past there was quite a lot of transit between buildings, now everything is under one roof. So is everything up and running perfectly now? Scott Sander: Pretty much, although the move will not finally be complete until the late autumn. We did not wish to rush things, giving ourselves the opportunity to learn as we went along. We brought in outside consultants to look at flows and processes and we have "stolen" from the US experience as much as possible. So far things have gone very smoothly and we think that to achieve a complex move such as this from scratch in a little over a year is pretty good going. And I want to take this opportunity to thank all the people in the company and at our suppliers and customers who have been such a big help in making it possible.
